When you hit rock bottom, you know something has to be better …
As a business owner and a mother, you have to consider: What if everything afterward could be that much more beautiful? What if your challenges bring out the best in you?
But we typically never imagine how much more amazing it can be!
Often we get caught in the everyday operations and don’t realize how truly powerful we are. And it’s time we celebrate that!
Powerful Synergy: Stories of How Motherhood and Entrepreneurship Strengthen Each Other is a collection of stories from women business owners who were inspired by their families to overcome their challenges.
Stories of escape from hard situations. Stories of those moments that break us only to build us up again. Stories of truths that were buried because of our busy-ness.
These all make us who we are as business owners, as mothers, as mavericks.
The women of Powerful Synergy want you to know that if you’re going through something, it will be alright. That it will ignite your badass strength and lead you to more of what you desire. Ultimately, it will lead you to harmony between motherhood and leadership, to your purpose.
Let our stories empower you!

Surviving Sh!t Creek: One Nurse's Story of Breakdowns, Breakthroughs, and Transformation
by Lori Ann Lewicki
Lori Ann Lewicki is an ICU travel nurse, life and health coach for nurses, mother of four (ages 26, 24, 19 and 3) and caregiver to her elderly father—so she never gets a day off from being a nurse. She is also an advocate for living your dreams.
Writing Surviving Shit Creek empowered Lori to follow her own dreams. Because she has grown so much as a nurse and a human, she hopes to inspire others to go after their dreams and never quit learning to be better than the day before.
Lori graduated from Community College of Allegheny County with her ADN in nursing in 2004 and, being a nerd, also graduated with an associate’s degree in psychology. She obtained her BSN in 2006 from California University of Penn., her PHRN in 2010, had her first CCRN from 2007-2010, her MSN in 2022, and retested for her CCRN in 2024. Lori has also been a certified health coach since 2019. She has worked in the ICU, in the ER, on the ambulance, in medical review, in home care, and as a nursing instructor over her career.
One of Lori’s dreams was to buy a Harley and get her motorcycle license, which she did in celebration of the completion of Surviving Shit Creek.

by James Protin
My name is James Protin. My professional journey spans 40 years in the engineering and construction industry. Did I mention that I’m not an engineer? It quickly became apparent that I would never be the smartest person in the room, so I had no choice but to become the hardest worker in every room I would enter.
This worked for a time, and I was able to push through my twenties. Then my life went off the rails. Darkness came, and I became an imposter. Words like anxiety, codependency, people-pleasing, and trauma dominated my story. At 35, I was being dismantled by depression. At 40, I thought my life was over, I was stuck, struggling to tread water. So, naturally, I burned it all to the ground. At 45, I started the journey to me. By 50, I started to recognize myself, and those words were replaced with new ones like gratitude, humility, empathy, and forgiveness. At 64, I know my life is just beginning.
A mentor suggested I start journaling as a substitute for traditional therapy … and it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done. I discovered that I love writing, so much so, that I am writing a book that will publish in 2023. It’s amazing how, when you stare at a blank page and spill your heart all over it, all the feels, especially the ones you don’t like to show people, you unlock everything. What appears on the page is brutally honest, sometimes painful, and always enlightening.

by Jennifer Silbaugh
Jennifer is a first-time author and a mental health advocate. She is a healthy, strong woman and a daughter, sister, wife, dog-mom, homeowner, artist, handbell ringer, consumer, advocate, and professional in the mental health field. She is dedicated to offering help and hope to those suffering from mental health challenges and finds joy in her family, friends, art, and God.
Jennifer’s journey from patient to professional began in 1993 as a patient seeking help with her own mental health struggles. After many years and some changes in the system, she was (and is) considered a consumer. A tumultuous journey involving a great deal of pain, lots of self-initiated hard work, and some key medical professionals started Jennifer’s advocacy path. Beginning in 2010, she was an advocate for UPMC’s Youth and Family Training Institute (YFTI) and worked on the Peer Support & Advocacy Network’s (PSAN) Warmline from 2011–2013.
A commitment to her own healing allowed Jennifer to become a certified peer specialist from 2013–2020. Jennifer was the first certified peer specialist to receive the UPMC Award for Commitment in Excellence and Service (ACES) in 2015.
A Dove in the Shadows was selected as an American Book Fest Best Book Awards finalist for 2023 and was awarded a The Author Zone Award in nonfiction for 2023.
