by James Protin

My name is James Protin. My professional journey spans 40 years in the engineering and construction industry. Did I mention that I’m not an engineer? It quickly became apparent that I would never be the smartest person in the room, so I had no choice but to become the hardest worker in every room I would enter.

This worked for a time, and I was able to push through my twenties. Then my life went off the rails. Darkness came, and I became an imposter. Words like anxiety, codependency, people-pleasing, and trauma dominated my story. At 35, I was being dismantled by depression. At 40, I thought my life was over, I was stuck, struggling to tread water. So, naturally, I burned it all to the ground. At 45, I started the journey to me. By 50, I started to recognize myself, and those words were replaced with new ones like gratitude, humility, empathy, and forgiveness. At 64, I know my life is just beginning.

A mentor suggested I start journaling as a substitute for traditional therapy … and it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done. I discovered that I love writing, so much so, that I am writing a book that will publish in 2023. It’s amazing how, when you stare at a blank page and spill your heart all over it, all the feels, especially the ones you don’t like to show people, you unlock everything. What appears on the page is brutally honest, sometimes painful, and always enlightening.
