Keep Your Writing Authentic with these 3 Tips

Keep Your Writing Authentic with these 3 Tips

If you’re energy-sensitive like I am, then you can spot a fake a mile away.

That’s why the mantra “fake it till you make it” feels so gross to me. People know when you’re slapping on a smile and telling them that you’re successful when you really don’t feel that way. And they can tell that in your writing too.

So how do we make sure that everything we write feels authentic and comes through that way to our readers? Start with these 3 tips.

  1. Stop censoring yourself. When you sit down to write about your truth, it can be tough, especially if it’s something that you haven’t fully come to grips with. If you’ve been through challenges or traumas in your life and they still trigger you when you’re writing, your instinct will be stop-and-start writing and a high level of censorship. Change this. Hide this. Say this instead. Just stop. It’s clear that you aren’t ready to write about it if this is happening, so either go back and change what you plan on talking about, work with a coach to help you smooth out the writing, or take a break from that part till you have done more healing around it.
  2. Own what’s real. Be honest with your readings about your feelings as you explain the steps, tell a story, or inspire them. They want to know who you are so they can trust you as their guide, and those feelings are about as real as it can get, even if they are crappy, sad, angry, or other low-vibrational feelings. If I feel like my negative feelings are normal, then I’m going to feel better about what I’m going through, and I appreciate you for the validation. Own what’s real in your heart so your reader can own what’s real in theirs too.
  3. Finally step up. This part is hard. It’s really really hard. (How often do I say that writing is hard?) But if you’re reading this, you’re interested in writing a book, and that means you want to be seen as a leader. You don’t have to “air your dirty laundry,” per se, but you do need to own your past, present, and future. This happens, be honest, talk about the struggles, and keep reaching for the next rung above you. Knowing that you have responsibility as someone shining the spotlight on themselves means that you are also cultivating a safe space for others to grow. Don’t shy away from that responsibility if it’s your soul calling.

Real, raw connection happens with authentic writing, and it’s about more than “learning how to write.” It’s about a feeling inside that permeates every part of you and seeps through your hands into the keyboard as the words flow. Own it. Love it. Write it. Share it. Be it.

Let’s chat about your book and see how I can help you get over the hurdles and finally start using your book as a tool to grow your business!
